Maria Shurkhal: Self-Care Workshop

INFO: Self-care workshop is a proposition to examine the Foucauldian idea of

the practice of freedom in a practical setting. The notion is derived from the Greco-Roman philosophy where freedom is a way of taking care of oneself – of knowing oneself and of reflective application of this knowledge. This practice of freedom is not possible through self-renunciation and self-instrumentalization, quite on the contrary – it calls for an exercise of the dancer’s agency.

ABOUT: Maria is a Ukrainian artist living and working in Vienna and engaged in the field of Performing Arts as a creator, researcher, and educator. She is currently a Dance researcher in the FWF project Smooth Spaces at the University of Music and Performing arts Vienna and works with the topics of agency, labor, and experimental models of collaborative practices.

Daniel Aschwanden – Wake up program for body and mind

Analogue, sensitive, agile, balancing body and mind,

I counter stress in times of Covid – spatial limitaition, fears, weak health, lack of touch, isolation pressure to maintain high level of output with a type of fitness as a „fitness“ not mainly relying on muscular strenght, efficiency and concepts of its enhancement.

The morning practice consists of an extended self massage, offers elements of somatic bodyperception by means of guided improvisations, conscious adressing of selected body structures and systems, both via anatomical details as well as in their influences on personal movement patterns .Soft movementstructures adressing different body systems (sceleton, organs, muscles, etc. ) maintain and increase the physical agility. Self awareness in movement offers frames of time and space for contact with oneself, finding one´s own impulses between inner and outer space, will raise a sense of well being as well as the standards of physical and mental balance.

Daniel Aschwandens movement- and dance – biography includes a wide array of experiences starting out from movement based theatre ( Grotowsky based methods ) to Butoh Dance (working with Min Tanaka´s Mai Juku) to Contact Improvisation ( Mark Tompkins, Lisa Nelson, Nina Martin and others) . He was founder and director of Vienna´s Bilderwerfer project for dancers with and without special needs. He is continuously practising Tai Ji and is also influenced by bodywork like Feldenkrais, Reiki, Authentic Movement.
